This is an original Gillinder & Sons Westward Ho Covered Butter Dish circa 1879. The two pieces measure to the top of finial 7-1/2" X 7-3/4" wide (at its widest point) and weigh 2-1/2 pounds. The top piece measures 5-3/4" tall X 5-3/4" wide and the bottom piece measures 2-1/2" tall X 7-3/4" wide. The Westward Ho pattern surrounds the lid with a deer (mouth closed), buffalo and log cabin set in a wilderness background (trees are straight and detailed) and a native American Indian finial on the lid (he has an adam's apple) used as the knob. The details are outstanding and crisp. I have been told the top is original but not sure of the base but it fits perfectly and they were sold to me as a set so I am assuming they are a pair. Please check out my pictures carefully because they are the best descriptors. Both pieces are in excellent condition with no chips or defects. Any questions, please email. Thanks!
