Ford 4.6, 5.4 3-Valve Cam Phaser Lockout Kit

This pair of cam phaser lockout blocks can be used to lock the factory cam phasers into the fully advanced position permanently. One kit includes two aluminum blocks, which is enough to do one Ford 4.6L or 5.4L 3V engine.

There are cheaper lockout blocks out there, but I have found the quality of these to be very good and they seem to fit nice and snug in the stock phasers. It's important that these blocks fit snug, and don't allow any movement of the phaser internally.

Note: This auction is for the two aluminum blocks only. The cam gear and bolts pictured are not included, and are only shown for reference. A Programmer or custom tune is also not included, but they are available separately in my Ebay store.

What are these for?

Factory Ford 3-Valve cam phasers are known for having issues, and aftermarket phasers are even worse. The main issue is that the phasers fail because they have a pin and spring inside that wear or break. They are designed to lock the cam into the fully advanced position at idle. This is to keep the cam timing from bouncing around at idle, when oil pressure is it's lowest. Over time, the pin or spring fails, and cam timing starts bouncing around. This causes a ticking or knocking noise to come from the phaser. The computer also throws trouble codes related to unwanted cam timing movement.

This problem is normally solved by installing a new pair of Ford cam phasers, but these phasers are not cheap, and neither is the labor to install them. Brand new cam phasers still have issues, and before very long you can find yourself right back in the repair shop installing more new phasers. The new phasers don't fix the problem, they just extend the failure time some. Other common issues like low oil pressure and clogged oil passages due to other engine problems just make the phaser issue happen even faster with high mileage vehicles.

How do they work?

These cam phaser lockout blocks are inserted into the cam phaser, where they take up all the space in one of the five oil passages, preventing all movement of the cam phaser and locking it tightly in the fully advanced position. Unable to phase or move, the ticking or knocking noise is gone for good. And since there's nothing here to fail long term, the solution is permanent. This keeps your truck on the road and out of the repair shop. This can be especially beneficial on high mileage or fleet vehicles.

How do you install them?

The short answer is that you remove the valve covers, and use an inexpensive 3V Wedge Tool that wedges the timing chain up against the crankshaft timing gear, preventing the chain from falling off the gear. This allows you to unbolt one cam phaser at a time, remove it, install these lockout blocks, and reinstall the phaser without removing the timing cover. You'll need to use a pair of brand new cam phaser bolts, because they are torque-to-yield one time use bolts. You'll also need to torque the new bolts down with a torque wrench and a torque angle gauge.

To install the lockouts, you will remove all of the cam phaser cover plate bolts except one. The one that holds the base of the clock spring is only loosened, not removed! After the lockouts are installed, use a little blue Loctite on the threads and reinstall the phaser cover plate bolts. If this is your first time, I highly recommend that you watch some You Tube videos on the process to familiarize yourself with the job.

Is tuning required?

Yes. If you don't load a VCT Delete Tune into the computer, you will get check engine lights, trouble codes, driveability problems, and the truck can even go into a reduced power "limp" mode. The solution is to install a custom VCT Delete tune into the computer. I have multiple solutions for this available in my Ebay store. In a nutshell, you will either buy a programmer, rent a programmer, send us the computer to be reprogrammed, or have us directly flash your vehicle (if you are local to the Ocala, FL area).

These options vary in price, and some are more suited to your situation than others. Renting a programmer can be one of the most cost effective methods if you aren't local to me. I've worked hard to find multiple tuning solutions for you that are FAR less expensive than the competition. Contact me if you have questions about what's best for you, or what's available right now.

How long does it take to get this Cam Phaser Lockout Kit?

I ship everything USPS Priority Mail, which takes 1-3 days anywhere in the country, and that often includes Saturdays since the Post Office works on Saturday. Sometimes, the west coast will get them in 2 days because they arrive by plane instead of truck. Arrival time just depends on when you order them and where you live. Just know that I try to ship everything as fast as possible, often the same day you order them. Ebay's shipping calculator does a poor job of estimating arrival time, in my opinion.

Can I order these with a programmer and a custom tune from you?

Yes, I have other auctions in my Ebay Store that include the programmer, the custom VCT delete tune, and the lockout blocks all in the same auction. I also sell each of those separately. If you already have an SCT programmer, I can sell you just the custom tune and you can use your own programmer.

Are they difficult to install?

Not really. If you can do the cam phaser job, you can install the Cam Phaser Lockout Kit.

I'm a Repair Shop or a Fleet Manager. Is there an economical way to do several of these?

Absolutely. I can cut your cost in half on the tuning portion of multiple jobs. This not only saves you money, but also makes this a same day job in the future. Please contact me!

Is there a down side?

The up side is certainly longevity of the repair, less down time on fleet vehicles, lower long term cost of maintenance and repair, and lower short term cost of the current repair. It's cheaper to delete VCT than it is to repair it. This is a rather permanent fix to the cam phasing portion of your engine (cam phasers and VCT solenoids). Those two items are practically eliminated from potential future failures by eliminating the cam phasing itself.

The down side, if there is one, is that there could be a slight decrease in fuel mileage, and/or high RPM horsepower. The reality is that if I didn't tell you that, you might have never even noticed. In fact, most people's gut feeling is that the low end torque actually increases and mileage stays the same. And even if high RPM horsepower is slightly decreased, you will likely never even notice. Plus, when is a truck engine really ever at high RPM anyway? The potential down sides are so minimal that it's tough to discern if there even is any loss. These losses are theoretical, and may not actually show up in the real world.

How do technicians feel about this?

Well, as you might guess, there are many different opinions. Some technicians think the only way is to use all new Ford parts, from the oil pump to new Ford timing chain components, to new Ford cam phasers and VCT solenoids. And while that will usually fix it, the problems can return. Sometimes quickly. But many of the technicians I talked to have told me that they started out feeling that way, and after repairing the same truck multiple times, they have given up on trying to repair them that way. It's quite an expensive job to do the entire cam timing system, and they don't like telling customers that they have to do it all over again a year or two later. A lot of technicians have told me that they gave up on doing that, and are now locking out every 3V truck that comes into their shop.

Will this solve all the timing chain issues?

No. This solves the cam phaser and VCT solenoid issues, but it does not solve any issues with the timing chain, gears, tensioners, guides, etc. If your problem is behind the timing cover and not above it, then this will not fix those issues. However, while you are fixing any timing chain issues, it's the perfect time to install this VCT delete kit as well, while you're in there.

What vehicles will this work on?

Any Ford 4.6L or 5.4L 3-Valve engine. That includes most 04-10 Ford or Lincoln Trucks and Expeditions, 05-10 4.6L Mustangs, and perhaps others.

Does this delete the cam sensor?

No. The cam sensor and the cam phaser reluctor wheel are still functional, as the computer needs to know cam position for sequential fuel injection. Deleting VCT with a custom tune will eliminate the cam phaser control and diagnostics, but will not eliminate the cam sensor, reluctor wheel, or cam timing codes.

Will this work with aftermarket cam phasers?

Maybe, but not always. If the aftermarket phaser uses the original Ford design, then yes. But some inexpensive aftermarket phasers do not. I can't speak for every brand, but the Dorman phasers are known for being a different size. I highly recommend that repair shops keep some decent used genuine Ford phasers around, and replace aftermarket phasers with those and a lockout kit, or with new Ford phasers.

Pro Tip: The 5 long cam phaser reluctor teeth are easily bent if the phaser is dropped. Make sure you inspect them carefully to ensure they are straight, or you'll get cam timing codes you can't explain.

Pro Tip: Don't remove the one cam phaser cover plate bolt that holds the base of the clockspring, or the spring will go flying and you can be injured. Only loosen that one.

Pro Tip: Using a Wedge Tool will allow you to remove and replace the cam phasers without removing the timing cover. Just remove the valve covers instead.

Pro Tip: Do one phaser at a time. Install one aluminum block in each phaser. Install it into the slot that it fits the most snugly into.

Pro Tip: I can cut your tuning costs in half when you do this job more than once. Ask me how!
