To introduce the new series in 2018—before the States and territories are honored—a special American Innovation $1 Coin was minted and issued. The coin pays homage to President George Washington who issued the first U.S. patent to Samuel Hopkins on July 31, 1790, for developing a process for making potash, an ingredient found in fertilizer. Millions of patents have been issued since then, a testament to our nation’s entrepreneurial spirit, and the remarkable innovation and discovery it unleashes.

The common obverse (heads side) of all the coins in this series features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty and the required inscriptions “$1,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

Coins in this series will display the year of minting or issuance, the mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the edge of the coins.
