The keyboard and the computer are not directly connected. The signal passes through the optocoupler. General minor failures are smoothed out by an optoisolator. In case of serious failures the optoisolator works as a fuse. If, for example, your computer case unexpectedly gets 220 volts (as it often happens with noname cheap cases) or there is a failure in your synthesizer, the optoisolator burns out while your devices, computer and synthesizer, are safe.
