[FRENCH INTERIOR DESIGN, PAINTING, GUSTAVE MOREAU, WALL DECORATION]

Offered here is an ORIGINAL VICTORIAN PAINTED INTERIOR DESIGN SAMPLE FROM AN FRENCH DESIGN COMPANY.

This overall work measures 25 in x 30.5 in. (paper size) The painted design measures 18.5 x 22.5 in. This example (as different from our other similar work) bears an applied label with a stylized "TP" in the upper right corner and the number '9921' in the space provided. We assume this is representative of the company responsible for producing this piece, but we have no idea who this company is.   The work has several new and old cello tape repairs to the perimeter of the work in addition to the obvious but unimportant edge losses. 

The intricately painted and complex design was likely intended for a wall design and based on the color register at the bottom, it was to be completed in at least 9 different colors. This piece is variously annotated in gaul ink, pencil and crayon. 

We were unable to find any other example of a similar interior design sample of this type for this period ( roughly 1850 - 1880).  We are continuing to research this interesting artifact of interior design from many decades past. We suspect works of this type were not intended to survive or be preserved for any purpose, especially as design tastes morphed over the century. We are however grateful this example survived despite the plethora of wars, disasters (both manmade and natural) and paper pulping efforts across the years.
