The APA-106 LED, also known as PL9823, is effectively a through hole version of the popular WS2812B surface mount individually addressable RGB LED (also known as a Neopixel), they are electrically compatible and employ the same data protocol so code should be interchangeable, noting that these devices use RGB bitstream ordering like the WS2811 discrete controller rather than the GRB bitsream ordering used in the WS2812b and most Neopixels(TM).  However, these devices are manufactured in standard size 5mm and 8mm diffuse LED packages (with 4 pins) which makes them much easier to use on breadboards or in other development scenarios.
