Steve McQueen purchased his 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S 1275 from Hollywood Sport Cars, which at the time was the leading European car dealer in Los Angeles. His friend Lee Brown, who owned an auto body and paint shop in Hollywood and had worked on McQueen's famous 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, was tasked with customizing the Mini.

Originally green and white, Brown repainted McQueen's Mini in a metallic brown with a beige roof. Modifications included a sunken radio antenna, a vinyl sunroof, and a wooden dashboard. Chromed and reversed wheels were added along with a single front-mounted fog light, and the interior was customized in a brown vinyl by famous upholsterer Tony Nancy.

After several years of ownership, McQueen sold the Mini to Hollywood Sport Cars. It then changed hands several times until it was advertised for sale in 1990 and bought by Lee Brown.
