Václav
Vačkář (1881 - 1954) was a Czech composer and conductor .
His
elementary school teachers discovered his musical talent and by 13 he played
the violin and flügelhoorn in the local orchestra. His family could not afford
to send him to conservatory so he gained his musical education in the military.
After three years of hard work, he was not included in the military orchestra
because he was hard of hearing. He then joined an orchestra in Russia. He
returned to Bohemia in 1900 and became conductor of Josef Faltys theater
orchestra. In 1903 he became soloist and second conductor of the concert band
of Šibenik in Dalmatia. A year later he was the conductor of a concert band on
the island of Korčula, Croatia . His son Dalibor Vačkář was also born in
Dalmatia, who was known for his film scores and as a composer of symphonic and
chamber music works. From 1908 to 1912, Vačkář was conductor of the concert
band in Boskovice , Moravia. During these four years he got to know the folk
music of South MoraviaAfter Moravia he had a brief stint conducting the Theater
of Krakow, Poland. He returned home to
Prague in 1913 landing positions as a violinist and later the solo trumpet in
the famous Czech Philharmonic. In 1919, at the invitation of Otakar Odstrčil ,
he became a member of the Vinohrady Theater Orchestra. Two years later he was a
member of the Šakovy Philharmonie. He later became conductor of a concert band
in the Alma and Minuta cinemas in Prague. After the time of silent films had
passed around 1930, he concentrated on composing and organizing his work. He
wrote a total of 332 pieces mostly for concert band and printed in various
publishing houses.
Together
with his son Dalibor, he wrote a book entitled, Instrumentation for Symphony
Orchestra and Concert Band . Since 1993, an annual Vačkárův Zbiroh festival has
been held in his memory, where international concert orchestras have competed.
