Offering an important and RARE 19th c. French Box. (ca. 1860). Signed on lock plate Diehl R. Michel Le Comte 19 Paris.
Crafted of very fine satin wood, this box boasts a stunning SEVRES plaque on top, framed by an intricate sculptural bronze design of florals and scrollwork.
Elegantly rounded sides. Opulent ormolu mounts of leaves and tendrils grace the four "corners" and gracefully elevate the box. Detailed bronze trim around top and bottom.
Parquetry design. Hinged top. Moire fabric lines the interior.

In very good to excellent antique condition. Minimal wear associated with gentle use. Sevres colors are bright and vivid-- no chips, no cracks. Wood is lustrous. Hinge is sturdy. Box opens and closes easily. Front right leg is slightly loose-- can be tightened. Other legs are very tight. Some age spotting on top moire. Fabric in front is detaching in a couple of places. No key. Considering age, this box is in wonderful condition.
Charles- Guillaume DIEHL (1811-1885) is considered among the most important cabinetmakers of the 19th-century. A native of Steinbach, Germany he traveled to Paris in 1840 and established a large atelier, with no fewer than 600 craftsmen by 1870. His pieces are found in such prestigious museums such as the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Musée de l'Ecole de Nancy, Nancy and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and in important private collections world wide. His furniture sells for $100,000 plus.
