In 2018, Canada issued 13 different Canadian Cannabis stamps, one for each of for its ten Provinces and three Territories. They are found on the government-sold packaging of each jurisdiction and only residents of a Province or Territory can get them by purchasing the product within their zone, in accordance with the legislation that is not the same in each jurisdiction. Packages are sealed with the stamps, so that users must rip the stamp before opening the box containing drug product. It is impossible for a collector to obtain unused cannabis stamps. Only provincially licensed producers/distributors are allowed to purchase them directly from the government and are required to use them for packaging as soon as they get them. For all these reasons, they are difficult to obtain and some have not been seen so far on the stamp market.

Cannabis excise stamps are delivered by the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) to the licenced producers/distributors wrapped in bundles of 500. The unit price of the cannabis excise stamp for the period April 1, 2018 to September 30, 2019 is $0.00714.
