Publicity Poster Stamp

Mærkat type poster stamp issued by Malernes Landspropaganda, which is the publicity branch of Københavns Malerlaug, which is the Copenhagen Painters' Guild.

According to the Guild's website at kbh.malerlaug.dk

Copenhagen's Painters' Guild was founded in 1622. That was the year the king gave the Guild its meaning - and the concept, as they were then, of statutes.

The guild was thus created during the reign of King Christian IV - the same king who had decided, some years before, to create the guild system: This monopoly on the provision of handicraft services in the city, which the guild exercised, gave poor quality and far too high prices, it was believed . The Competition Authority of later times would have agreed.

But the result of the King's efforts was merely anarchy and disorder - contrary to the conditions of today's competition law. Christian IV ended up leaving the guilds at on their own and even granted that painters also got their own guild. The old guild system lasted until 1860, after the law on business freedom was passed in 1857. The oldest guild in Denmark is the tailors' guild, which can be traced back to the 1300s.

The guilds naturally helped to protect the local market. Not every painter was allowed to set himself up as a painter in a city; he was required to be a member of the guild, which required certain qualifications and a somewhat violent admission ceremony.

If you were first a member of the guild, you could be sure of the colleagues' help and support - even to the master's widow, in the event of the master's death.

This social function is essential for understanding the guild system, and it really did not cease until the introduction of social reforms around the turn of the last century. With the labor market reforms - also from the turn of the last century - the guilds in many cases became employers' associations, which entered into agreements with their counterparts - trade unions. This also applied to Copenhagen's Malerlaug, which was an independent employer association until 1980, when we merged with the Central Association of Malermestre in Denmark, CMA. In 1990, the two then nationwide employers' organizations were merged into Danske Malermestre, which today is joined by the Danish Employers' Association and SMVDanmark - the new Craft Council.
The design of this stamp reproduces a publicity poster created by famed graphic artist Thor Bøgelund (1890 - 1959) in 1957. The design depicts a painter with tools of his trade, and has the text, at top and bottom "Painters Come in Winter and Summer". The circular text, around the painter, reads: "Beautiful - Clean - Fast - Durable Workmanship".

Stamp is VF, OG, NH.

Approximate Image Size: 33 x 45 mm.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).

Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.

A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.

* A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
