The keys to the maps appeal lie in two things - the first is the date......just after the map was drawn up, Glasgow was radically changed by the building of the motorway network - the M8 was built right through the city centre and over the River Clyde at the Kingston Bridge. Large parts of the city were changed with buildings, homes and streets being demolished and many people relocated. The city landscape was changed (for better or worse) forever.
Glasgow being Glasgow, social change is also demonstrated in the detail on the map - landmarks such as hospitals, public swimming baths and key public buildings are shown (and illustrated).
The key football clubs in Glasgow are illustrated (Celtic, Ranger and Partick Thistle, and others).
Also shown are shipyards, golf courses, public parks, Calderpark Zoo, etc etc. Original road layouts before M8 are shown accurately, since the map is based on OS survey...
The second key appeal to the map is its decoration - the map was originally for entertainment and tourism purposes, and of course is in colour.... it has also been enhanced (by Elizabeth Scott) by the addition of hand drawn pictorial detail - hospitals show nurses, swimming baths show bathers, important buildings are illustrated, etc etc.
