YOUTH / KID's 100% HEAVY DUTY COTTON
Wearing
the number 130, actor James Dean's 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder was
nicknamed Little Bastard. Dean had been working on a second career as a
race car driver since 1954 and had campaigned several cars by the time
he acquired his Porsche 550 Spyder from Hollywood's Competition Motors
in September of 1955.
Dean was scheduled to compete at the
Salinas Road Races on October 1st and 2nd and a decision was made to
drive the Porsche from Los Angeles to Salinas to properly break it in
and allow Dean to familiarize himself with the car. Riding with Dean in
the passenger seat of the 550 Spyder was Porsche field engineer and
mechanic Rolf Wütherich who had prepared the car for competition. On
their way to Salinas on September 30, 1955, the Porsche collided with a
Ford sedan at the junction of California State Routes 41 and 46 near
Cholame. James Dean, aged 24, lost his life. Rolf Wütherich, badly
injured, survived.
