Marie-Amelie, Queen of the French (1782-1866), was a daughter of King Ferdinand of the Two Sicilies and his wife, Archduchess Maria Caroline of Austria. A niece of Queen Marie-Antoinette, her marriage to Louis-Philippe, King of the French, was seen as an important link to the past and the continuity of royal bloodlines. Mother of ten children, Marie-Amelie was known for her devotion to family life, religious piety, and charitable activities. Following the French Revolution of 1848, Marie-Amelie was forced to flee from France with her family. She died in exile in England in 1866 at the age of 83.

The present work is an engraving by Jean Nicolas Laugier (1785-1875), based on a painting by Francois, Baron Gerard (1770-1837), Portrait of Marie-Amelie, Duchesse d Orleans (1782-1866) [1817, oil on canvas] at the Musee Conde, Palace of Chantilly, painted prior to her husband's election to the French throne. Another edition of this engraving is in British Royal Collection. In the portrait, Marie-Amelie wears a high-waisted Empire-style dress with gem-set belt and a hairstyle of elaborate curls interwoven with peals, popularised by Empress Josephine and still in fashion during the 1820s.
