Ferrari's 250 GTO was produced between 1962 and 1964. The 250
designation represents each engine cylinder's displacement in cubic
centimeters, while the GTO designation - 'Gran Turismo Omologato' - is
Italian for Grand Touring Homologated. The cars were built to compete in
the FIA's Group 3 Grand Touring racing category. The FIA rules at the
time stipulated that one hundred cars must be manufactured during twelve
consecutive months for homologation into the GT racing category.
However, Ferrari only built thirty six 250 GTOs.
