Cherkasskaya (1876-1934 was a leading lyrico-spinto soprano with the Imperial Opera at the
Mariinsky Theatre from 1900-1918. She sung in Diaghilev's Paris season in 1909.
She also sung at various times at La Scala, Athens, Monte Carlo, China and
several seasons in Paris. As she was from an aristocratic family, she was
compelled to work hard labor after the Revolution until she escaped to Riga,
Latvia, where she sung with the Latvian National opera from 1919-1929. She sung
in lieder concerts after she retired from opera.
At
the Mariinsky she created a number of roles in the theatre including, the first
Senta in "Fliegende Hollander", the first Countess in "Le Nozze
di Figaro", the first Leonora in "Fidelio" and Donna Anna in
Dargomyzhsky's "The Stone Guest. She created the title role of
"Miranda" by Kazanli and Rimsky wrote the role of Fevronia for her,
worked on the role with her but in the end, she was not in the first
performance of "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh.
