GUNNER WITH A GUN BOMBARDA 15 C.

Bombarda (French bombarde, Italian bombarda; the name comes from the Greek-Latin word "bombos" - a strong roar). A short-barreled large-caliber artillery gun that fired large stone or iron cannonballs along a hinged trajectory. The greatest firing range was achieved when the barrel was raised at an angle of 45 degrees. The bombard was effectively used in the siege and defense of fortresses and castles, as well as the shelling of closed field positions. Later it was named a mortar for the shape of a barrel resembling a mortar (fr. Mortier). A massive short wrought iron barrel passed into a narrow powder chamber with an ignition hole. With the help of iron strips, the barrel was attached to a wooden block carriage with a simple vertical aiming mechanism. Wooden wheels with massive hubs and forged iron rims.
The artilleryman serving the bombard cannon was called the bombardier. The bombard was designed to throw a heavy projectile over a fortress wall or earthen rampart. The bombard also fired point-blank at the walls, towers and gates of the castle with the aim of destroying them. Shooting was also carried out on the ground, striking the enemy's manpower - in this case, the nucleus made several ricochets on solid ground and found its victims in the dense battle formations of the enemy cavalry and infantry.
