Publicity Poster Stamp

Poster stamp issued as publicity for the 1972 annual charity event known as Børnehjælpsdag, which literally means "Childrens' Aid Day".
According to the Børnehjælpsdag website at bhd.dk:

Børnehjælpsdagen is one of Denmark's oldest organizations. It was founded in 1904 by philanthropist and municipal doctor Dr. Johan Niels Gottlob Carlsen, who was a fervent supporter of the children's movement.

Carlsen was an efficient man. He wrote several articles and debate posts about the miserable conditions under which poor and orphaned children grew up in orphanages and asylums, primarily in Copenhagen. He held meetings with the city's enterprising men and convinced them of the idea at a Child Welfare Day.

In April 1904, there was a founding meeting in the Medical Society's premises in Bredgade in Copenhagen. Here, a Main Committee was elected consisting of Johan Carlsen himself and about 30 well-respected business people and women with an interest in the children's cause. The chairman of the Main Committee then became the mayor of the Copenhagen department's 3rd department Adolph Jacobi.

The main committee's most important goal was the holding of the first Child Welfare Day, where money was to be collected for the poor children in Copenhagen.

In a few days, the Main Committee succeeded in recruiting several hundred volunteers, many of whom came from the children's institutions that the Child Welfare Day would support. Everyone helped to arrange what was to become the world's first Child Welfare Day - and an annual spring announcement for the inhabitants of Copenhagen. The then king, Christian IX, agreed to support the project.

On Friday, May 6, 1904, the citizens of Copenhagen woke up to a changed city that had been put on the other end because of the event.

The idea spread to the rest of the country, where many market towns took up the idea, so that Børnehjælpsdagen was held in many Danish cities. The day became a school holiday until 1972.

Today, Børnehjælpsdagen is a modern humanitarian organization that works every day for placed children and vulnerable young people in Denmark.

This is a Mærkat style poster stamp, but the details about the publisher are unknown. The design depicts a carousel style horse, with children in the background.

This example is F/VF, NH (appears to have dry gum).

Approximate Image Size: 31 x 47 mm.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).

Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.

A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.

* A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
