The sheet comes from a series published in 1796 by the French publisher and draftsman Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (1757 - 1810) on behalf of the French Directory. This included the official costumes of French representatives and state officials, as well as uniforms of the French army from the time of the Directory. Following on from the ancient democracies, the new state costume in the form of coats, long robes and short tunics explicitly took up the clothing of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
