Things to keep in mind when buying a belt grinder:
1. Minimum power of the motor should be 2HP. If it is less, the grinder is under powered.
2. The RPM of the motor should be 3600 RPM for a 4" Dia. drive pulley. If the RPM is 1750, the belt maximum speed is half of 3800 fps and it might be to slow for some applications.
3. A lot of belt grinders sellers praise how big is the square tubing or how "heavy and solid" it is. This is not essential as you are pushing against it with your hands and you are not going to bend the frame no mater how hard you push. What is important is the so called "Wrap angle" which is the angle that the belt is wrapping around the drive pulley. The bigger the angle is, the contact area between the drive pulley and the belt is increasing allowing for more power to be transmitted from motor to the belt before free spinning. This angle gets smaller as the tracking pulley is closer to the drive pulley so the further the tracking pulley is from the motor the better the design is.
4. Look for a grinder where the rest table is adjustable preferably on 3 axes. such that can be adjusted vertically and horizontally under the grinder's wheel. This feature, together with a reversible rotation will allow you to do hollow grinding easily.
5. Look for a grinder that tilts from vertical to horizontal position because this will allow you to use the large and small diameter wheels horizontally, and that will make a huge difference when you are grinding round profiles.

Look for all the pivoting axes to have shoulder bolts, not regular screws.
Shoulder bolts are more precise specially for bearing axes.
