Similar scent and flavor to cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. The dried, unripe berry of an evergreen tree, Pimenta Dioica, Allspice is a native of Jamaica, Honduras and Guatemala. The spice has been used in jerk seasoning, curries, stews, and soups in Jamaican recipes for ages.
It is said to have been discovered by Christopher Columbus, who brought it to Spain, where it was mistaken for pepper and thus named “pimienta.” It is more popularly known as pimento in the spice world.
Health Benefits The pungent and fragrant spice is used in pickling spice, pickles, cakes, spiced tea mixes, pies, cookies, ketchup, and sausages. With its aromatic and sweet flavor reminiscent of cinnamon and cloves with a hint of nutmeg, this wonder spice is derived from the P. Dioica plant berries, which are plucked unripe and dried naturally in the sun.
The aromatic spice is also known for its therapeutic properties. It is believed to combat viruses, bacteria, and fungi while enhancing digestion and relieving toothache, muscle ache. Eugenol found in the oil derived from Allspice has a numbing effect and pain reducing qualities.
