Italian heirloom Onion
 *Cipolla rossa di Tropea tonda*
 (Allium cepa)

Cipolla Rossa di Tropea is the name given to the red onion cultivated between Nicotera, in the province of Vibo Valentia, and Campora San Giovanni, in the municipality of Amantea, in the province of Cosenza, and along the Tyrrhenian coast. It is mainly produced between Briatico and Capo Vaticano (Southern Italy)
It consists of several concentric fleshy tunics of white complexion and red wrapper; It is cultivated in these areas for over two thousand years, imported by the Phoenicians, and for over a century, now combined with tourism, contributing to the socio-economic development of the area. The sweetness of the vegetable seems to depend on the particularly stable microclimate in winter, without changes in temperature by the action of meekness exerted by the nearby sea, and the fresh and loamy soils, which determine the valuable features of the product.
Cipolla Rossa di Tropea ha been recognized by the European comunity as an IGP product (Protected Geographical Indication).
