A Guideline only for wire usage:

18g wire - a strong wire. Used for making spacers, clasps, pins etc. Anything that needs to keep its shape.

20g wire - a good wire for making earhooks, headpins, eyepins, and small clasps etc. A strong wrapping wire also.

22g wire - ideal for wire wrapping crystal or semi-precious beads, scrapbooking, paper-crafts, home craft etc.

24g wire - perfect for wire wrapping smaller items, chain, rubber stamping & delicate embellishments etc.

26g wire - ideal for wire wrapping embellishments to tiaras, wire stitching, embroidery, seed bead projects etc.

28g wire - a good wire for knitting, weaving and crochet. Also good for free-forming wrapping using small beads.
