Offered
for auction is a Continental copy of a Derby Porcelain figurine, circa 19th century, Mansion House
Dwarf or “Grotesque Punch.” These corpulent figures, originally created
by Robert Bloor for Derby, but this stamp indicates a Samson copy because it is hard paste and were inspired from a series of drawings by
Jacques Callot’s entitled, “Grosteque Dwarves.”
According to
historical facts, the figures were actually real-life dwarfs who were
hired to stand outside of the Mansion House in London wearing
advertisements on their large hats. They have originally been produced by The
Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Co., since the late 18th century. The
earlier pieces are quite rare and highly collectible.
Size: 6” Height.
