Rare large early 19th century Edo Period Arita Imari octagonal footed bowl. The bowl decorated with 4 symmetrical panels inside & outside & adorns under-glazed colours of red, cobalt blue, light blue, green. white & heavy gold enamel. It has raised foot rim with under-glazed blue band around it. This interesting bowl is designed by famous Japanese designer Nakamura Hochu (1790-1813) after Ogata Korin (1658-1716). Ogata Korin was Japanese artist of the Tokugawa period, famous for his screen paintings, lacquere work and textile designs. Depicting eccentric images of Ebisu, Benten & Daikoku, 3 of 7 deities of Good Fortune. is near his mallet & 2 bales of rice on his side hand in hand with Benten (Goddess of love). Ebisu (patron of fishermen) with his fishing pole is dragging Benten & Daikoku away because of coming thunderstorm. Thunderstorm coming symbolically illustrated by golden abstract figure of Raijin on both sides of the bowl.
