Here is an undated Civil War Token, created during America's Civil War when coinage was scarce. These tokens were privately made and traded as currency until coins became readily available to the public again. The subjects of the tokens included patriotic themes or merchant advertising. The United States government temporarily allowed the use of Civil War Tokens as money because the economic situation was so dire.

This token is a merchant token, also called a Store Card, for the company H.M. Lane Lamps. The obverse has the name, specialty, and address of the store, on 18 Spring Street in New York. The reverse says "Not One Cent" inside a wreath, styled after the U.S. cents of the era but cleverly sidestepping counterfeit accusations with the word "Not" at the top. The reference number for this token is NY-630-AP-14a, and the rarity is listed as R-3 on a scale of 1 to 9.  ***The photos are of the actual token you will receive.***
