2021 - Royal Canadian Mint - R&D Security Test 6-Token Set: Behind the ScenesIn 2018, we gave you a first glimpse of our patented tri-metal technology that further expands design possibilities by unlocking new metal combinations. But why stop at three metal components? This token set offers you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the latest from our R&D facility in Winnipeg. All six tokens were used to develop new innovations, including the experimental MC4 that combines four different components: an outer ring, a polymer or metal separator and an inner core featuring two different alloys. Designed for maximum impact, the patented MC4 represents a bold step forward in the evolution of circulation coins; and with the addition of multi-security features, the MC4 is as visually appealing as it is secure. Design:
The saying “If it was easy, everyone would do it” inspired us to do something nobody has ever done or would even think of doing. We set out to make the most secure coin possible, and you can see the results of our hard work with this token set. Also, every mint makes mono-metallic coins and most make bi-metallic ones — some even make tri-metallic ones — but we asked ourselves, “How much farther can we take this?” - Brad Everton, Senior Manager, Applied Research (Winnipeg) These innovative products were created after receiving feedback on our previous R&D Token Set (2018). That set’s tri-metallic prototypes combined value and security features in a way that made them more appealing to collect, even as circulation coins, so our team set out to redefine what was possible. We came up with the Multi-Component Composite Circulation Coin or MC4. Not only did we create the MC4’s structure and features, we also developed the technology that allows the different components to be automatically assembled and struck at high speed – that was the real challenge, and we succeeded. - Xianyao Li, Chief Technology Officer Packaging: Sealed in Mylar to allow an unobstructed view of both sides, your six tokens are enclosed in an envelope and accompanied by a tent card insert with specifications, as well as a special note from the Chief Technology Officer at the Royal Canadian Mint.
