De Hooge, Romain. (1645 - 1708)

Nautical chart of the surroundings of Isle d'Oléron for the use of the armies of the King of Great Britain.

Amsterdam

 1693

Dimensions: 57 cm x 48 cm without the margins.

The maritime atlas from which this map comes was drawn from manuscripts of the British Admiralty. At the time, it was the most expensive Atlas ever produced.

Map entirely watercolor at the time with old pigments. 1 small reinforcement at the back in the corner.  Very nice print on heavy laid paper surrounded by regular margins.

Remarkable map where we have the towns of Marans La Rochelle and the Ile d'Oléron represented in beautiful cartouches. 'Yeu, Ile de Ré, Ile d'Aix. The English Admiralty knew little about these coasts and the proportions are very far from reality.

The remarks on the map are very different from what we usually find, it is indicated for the Navigators of background color, moon, speed of currents, here are some examples:

- Rochebonne very dangerous bench
- from here we see the Isles de Ré and Oléron,
- Gray sand stained with Black
- Gray sand, rotten rockery, shells of all kinds and points of alènes
- Numerous mentions of Tides, Moon and currents.
- New lantern on the Whales
- Ile d'AIx or Brant Eyland or Banjart
- In Oleron St Pierre becomes St Pierre Bonemie

Very rare copy in old colors and in remarkable condition of this exceptional card which is missing from many collections.
