John Drescher Co. Print "The Elk" H.H. Fariss Poem
BPOE Elk Lodge
Original Frame & Glass
RARE

This dates to either the 1920s or 1930s.  My grandfather was a member of the Order of the Elk, and this hung in the family home.  He had grown up in the US, and travelled extensively in his line of work.

It is a beautiful old piece, with the poem printed in embossed script on a blue matte background.  The decorative framing and rendering of an elk are embossed as well, with gold flourishes.

The poem is ascribed to H.H. Fariss. It is copyrighted by John Drescher Co. Inc N.Y.  It extols the virtues of the Elk:

‘An Apostle of Good-Will and Cheer … his is the Creed of Unselfishness … His spirit of Charity … His Brotherly Love …’
Concluding:
‘An Elk is an Apostle of Sunshine,
Beyond a doubt this is true,
For he practices “Do unto others
As you’d have them do unto you.”’

As a header above the poem, the Elks motto appears:

“The faults of our brothers we write upon the sands
Their virtues on the tablets of love and memory.”

The original gilded frame is 10-3/4” x 7-5/8” x 5/8” thick.  It has both its original glass and hanging hardware. The backing paper is crumbling with age, but this piece is otherwise flawless.

It is clean and odour-free.  Ours is a smoke-free home.
