Labdanum, also called ladanum, ladan, or ladanon is a sticky brown resin obtained from the shrub Cistus ladanifer.
It was historically used in herbal medicine and is still used in the preparation of some perfumes and vermouths.
The resin is known for its astringent, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic effects.
It has been used since antiquity as an expectorant and antibiotic.
When inhaled, is considereed to be effective treatment for bronchitis, common colds, relaxes the mucus for quick relief from coughs and fungal respiratory infections.
Can treat diarrhea and runny nose.
When applied externally, it helps skin diseases, heals wounds, burns and inflammation of the skin and relieves pain and swelling.
Labdanum is produced today mainly for the perfume industry, is the main ingredient used when making the scent of amber in perfumery.
Labdanum's odour is variously described as amber, animalic, sweet, fruity, woody, ambergris, dry musk, or leathery.
