Antique Large Chinese Paper Mache Round Covered Box; Up for sale is the beautifully crafted large Chinese paper (or papier) mache box in round shape, dated 19th century.

The covered paper mache primarily in beige color features a more bulging waist at the opening region between the removable lid and box. The top of the lid is painted with a boy portrait flanked at the rim by black lacquer. Both the lid and box are further separated into four sections by black lacquer, each of which is beautifully hand painted throughout with floral motifs. 

Paper mache is a composite material consisting of paper pulp bound with an adhesive and sculpted to shape. As stated in Wikipedia, not long after Chinese learned how to make paper during the Han Dynasty around 200 AD, they appeared to make paper mache such as warrior helmets, mirror cases, snuff boxes, or ceremonial masks. Chinese papermaking was brought to Europe by the 11th century. Paper mache appeared in Europe around 1725 as an alternative to similarly treated plaster or carved wood in architecture.
