A sad & evocative

World War Two German

Im Memorium Death Card

(Sterbebild)

for a Wehrmacht Austrian Soldat in an

Infantry Regiment

Hubert Pfeffer

a conscript killed in action in the

Stalino (now Donetsk in Ukraine) region of

the Russian Front on 17th August 1943.

(Aged just 20, the foto features him in his M.42/43 Service Tunic & Forage Cap_

Such moving death cards were a typical feature of

Germany's Catholic Religion

and numerous copies of these sad death notices of the soldier named,

would be sent out to friends & relatives in the days & weeks

following his tragic death in action in World War Two..

This 'double-panel' card

(measuring approx 6" x 5")

is from the Kirchberg region of  the Austrian Tirol near Kitzbuhel

and is in a very good condition.

A sad but impressive wee document from the Second World War German Home Front...
