Name :   Acrostichum aureum

Common name :  Golden leather fern, Swamp fern, Mangrove fern

Familia:  Pteridaceae

Species: Acrostichum aureum  L.

Botanical :

The golden leather fern has large fronds growing to a length of 1.8 metres (six feet). The leaves are glossy, broad and pinnate, the pinnae being dark green, leathery, alternate and widely spaced. The outer fronds arch over sideways but the central ones are nearly straight. Some of the larger fronds bear sporangia (reproductive organs) on the upper five to eight pairs of pinnae. These are brick red and give the pinnae a felted appearance.

Distribution and habitat

The golden leather fern is found in tropical and sub-tropical areas around the world. It grows in swamps and mangrove forests, salt marshes and on river banks and is tolerant of raised salinity levels. The spores germinate better, however, in fresh water. It tends to grow on slight elevations in the mangrove swamp in areas which are inundated by the sea occasionally. It can also grow in freshwater locations. There are two plant forms. The larger ones occur on the periphery of the swamp where they may reach 4 metres (13 ft) while much more stunted plants grow in the areas which are frequently inundated. It can grow in full sun or in deep shade

Cultivation

Golden leather fern can be grown under high light in garden soil or potting mix, if the substrate is kept constantly wet. Ordinary fresh water (not brackish water) is sufficient for cultivation.

How to grow spores

1. Put the sterilized material into a container, such as pots, baskets or plastic boxes. Water spray to moisturize.

2. Sow the spores onto the seeding material.

3. Spray water with anti-mold and prevent mold.

4. Cover with a plastic bag or close the deposit. Put in the shade.

How to split fern

1.The spore will start to proliferate within about 1 month (depending on species).

2. In this phase, if the fren is overgrown, it should be planted in the sporangia. Using the tongs in the clamp. Place a spacing of about 2 cm close the deposit and put it in the shade.

3. When the fern is larger than 3 cm, it can be planted individually by using a Sphagnum moss or peat moss, put in a box or baked in a bag to control moisture. Until the fern grows stronger, then move out of the box to gradually adapt to the outside environment.

Suggestion

Breeding spores may be identical or different from the breed. It is a good thing because you may have different shapes to accumulate.
