One of the special PDO products of Greece, the peanut from Aegina, not only stands out for its quality and taste, justly winning the international title  but at the same time, it is an excellent superfood for our body.
The first organized peanut was made in 1860 by D. Pavlidis (of the well-known chocolate industry) on his estate in Psychiko. 
The first peanut sapling is said to have been brought to Aegina probably from Syria by the doctor Nikos Peroglou in 1896, creating the first coastal peanut with an area of ​​twenty acres. 
A combination of a sufficient number of factors such as the arid climate, the proximity to the sea that offers low relative humidity and the semi-arid cultivation in the limestone soils of the island.
The establishment of the Agricultural Cooperative of Peanut Producers of Aegina dates back to 1947 and operates uninterruptedly until today, listing 347 members. 
It collects, processes and trades on their behalf 30% of the production of Aegean pistachio.
On July 2, 1996, Aegina peanut is recognized as a PDO product. that is, Product of Designation of Origin.

Today on Aegina island are cultivated 3,500 acres with 120,000 pistachio trees that produce the famous pistachio of Aegina.

They are very high in vitamins such as niacin and folic acid, vitamin B6, fiber and antioxidants but also manganese and magnesium.
They help lower cholesterol and prevent the formation of atherosclerosis.Pistachios are nuts with the least calories.
