The Story:Hello. My name is Scott James and I am a fifth grade math and science teacher in Sterling Illinois. My wife Mary Is a Myofascial Release Therapist. We are avid hiker’s and have hiked numerous trails long distance and short. The most recent was in 2019 and was the Maroon bells Four pass loop. This was done on the one year anniversary of my wife nearly passing due to a septic infection that nearly killed her and ate most of her L4 and L5 vertebrae, leading to a spinal fusion. This was to be a celebration of her 8 month recovery, however about four months before our trek I was rear ended by a texting teen leaving me with a concussion and traumatic brain injury. We celebrated her recovery along with me recovering from my injury. I often times was incapacitated during this trek due to the affects of the brain injury. In teaching I have often times used my hiking experiences with my students to relate certain mathematical and scientific topics. I also have use these experiences as a teaching tool for perseverance and intestinal fortitude. Often relating it to always giving your best and not quitting even when things are tough and seem to be insurmountable.A lot of the students I teach are inspired and motivated by these tales and that someone my age doing this (50 this June) . After hearing the tales of these long distance treks they often give more of themselves inside and outside of the classroom. Often times I relate the everyday aspects of the long distance trek in regards to the applications of math in this real world setting. An example of this is calculating elevation and distance to reliable water sources. In science I teach how to live off the land and the importance of and how to leave a zero imprint in these pristine wilderness areas. This leads me to this summer and we could use your help! Still recovering from the mountain of medical bills and suffering major and minor gear failures pack and sleep gear etc.. We are hoping to hike the Colorado trail From Denver to Durango. In doing this we hope to bring awareness to the affects traumatic brain injuries and it’s broader impact it has on the families of those suffering. We are currently looking for sponsors to help us with either a financial contribution or more importantly Gear due to the gear failures we sustained doing the Maroon Bells, we are looking for any sponsors to help us on this trek. Any support you can give in the way of gear would be greatly appreciated. We will be doing unboxing videos revealing our sponsors along with gear reviews and have Tifosi Eye-ware Support us with Eye- ware, Sawyer provided us with water filtration and Altra was gracious in providing our foot- ware. We intend to document this 500 mile trek posting Video blogs throughout and at the end of the journey created a video detailing the trip with shout outs to our sponsors and gear reviews. We a so plan in creating a calendar. The calendar to be sent out to all who supported us. Any and all proceeds made with the sale of the calendar (over the expenses) will be donated to The John Hopkins Medicine for Brain Science.I hope not only to inspire and educate my fifth grade students , but further a great cause. Thank you for your consideration and support.Sincerely, Scott Jameshttps://www.facebook.com/HikingtoHeal/https://www.facebook.com/scott.james.3576/https://www.instagram.com/scottjamesart/
