Description:

Centaury (Centaurium erythraea) also known as European Centaury or Common Centaury is a plant that belongs to the Gentianaceae family, it grows almost all over Europe, North Africa and Southwest Asia. It is found in wet meadows, forest glades and sandy soils. Its height ranges from 10 to 50 cm. The stem is square or hexagonal, hollow when the plant grows and branches near the top. The leaves are oval and grow in a rosette. Its flowers consist of 5 pink petals at the top of a long stem, and are surrounded by calyxes that are divided in the middle of their length into 5 long narrow sections and have 5 stamens with distinct anthers. The flowers accumulate in large numbers in solid inflorescences. The flowering tops of the plant have a red color and a bitter taste. 


It is used as a decoction for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, indigestion, heartburn and anorexia - bitter herbs are considered to stimulate the appetite. Centaury also has anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is included in cosmetic products because it has anti-allergic, soothing and astringent properties. Finally it is thought to help fight fever.


Making Tea: Put half a teaspoon of the dried herb in a cup of boiling water and leave it for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Drink up to 2 times a day.
