Minias is the saint connected with the origin and spread of Christianity in early Florentia (3rd-4th century). According to tradition, he was born on October 25, 250 and later the legendary lives of the saints would make reference to the death of Minias and where it occurred. The passio, (Passion of the saints life), speaks of a mons florentinus (florentius), a Florentine mount, as the place where Minias died. In the oldest Antiphonary of the Florentine church, dating from the 12th century and now found in the citys archiepiscopal archive (AAF), the liturgical memory of St. Minias (ff. 180v-184r) occupies an important place. The historical basis of this sung prayer is the Passion of Minias, the oldest we know (BHL 5965), accompanied by liturgical texts of praise and honor. Through them, the invisible presence of the saint takes on a vivid, luminous aspect that emanates into the congregation. In the case of the divine offices of St. Minias, the responsories, inspired by the life of the saint as narrated in his Passion, are true songs of meditation designed to generate prayer that is born through listening.
