Sinclair after Heine & Brown on art print cardboard (21x28cm ) typographically titled and inscribed below the depiction; from: "Narrative of the expedition of an american squadron to China Seas and Japan, performed in the years 1852, 1853 and 1854 under the command of Commodore MC Perry, United States Navy, by order of the government of the United States." The decorative lithograph comes from the work published in the USA in 1856 about the US Navy expedition under the command of Matthew C. Perry (1794 - 1858) to the China Sea and Japan in the years 1852-54. The aim of the venture was to try to free Japan from its political and economic isolation policy with the help of "Gunboat Diplomacy". In order to capture this first glimpse of the isolated country, the artists Peter Bernhard Wilhelm Heine (1827 in Dresden - 1885 in Kötzschenbroda) and Eliphalet Brown (1816 - 1886) accompanied the expedition during this time. The writer Bayard Taylor (1825 in Kennett Square - 1878 in Berlin) was also present. The itinerary ran from Norfolk (Virginia) via Madeira, St. Helena, Cape Town, Mauritius, Ceylon, Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong and Shanghai to mainland Japan and its islands.

The rare view somewhat brown-stained. Lower left with a smaller dog-ear.
