Stevia rebaudiana is a plant species in the genus Stevia of the family Asteraceae. It is commonly known as candyleaf, sweetleaf or sugarleaf.

It is a small seasonal plant which grows to a height of 30–60 centimetres.It has elongated leaves that grow along the stems and are lined up against each other. The flowers are typically trimmed to improve the taste of the leaves.

It comes from the rainforests of Brazil and Paraguay. Native American Indians used Stevia mainly as a sweetener and it was later adopted by European settlers. 

The largest use of stevia as a sweetener today is in Japan.

Basic Properties: A natural calorie-free sweetener that does not raise blood sugar.

Medicinal uses: Its chemicals improve cardiovascular function and are beneficial in the case of hypertension.

They also have a positive effect on some chronic infections, they act as bactericidal substances, 

mainly against treptococcus mutans, Pseudomonasaerugin, Proteus vulgaris without adverse effects on blood sugar levels.

They have dermatological use (eczema, acne, candida, anti-wrinkle action), act as a feed additive improving the taste, appetite and digestion.
