Charles Ulm's flying partner and friend was Charles Kingfsford Smith, and Nancy Bird, upon her arrival in Sydney, was Kingsford Smith's first pupil, in August 1933. Charles Ulm was flying from Sydney until his disappearance in December 1934, and would have known Ulm.

Ellen Rogers, the author of this work (but who died before it was published) was secretary to both Ulm and Kingsford Smith and would also have met Nancy Bird.
