Damiana (Turnera diffusa) is is a low-growing plant with yellow flowers and aromatic leaves. It grows in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The plant can reach a height of up to 2 meters, while its leaves can reach a length of up to 25cm. The aroma of its leaves is reminiscent of chamomile. Damiana is used as an ingredient in a traditional Mexican liqueur.
The herb acts as a neurotonic, antidepressant, urinary antiseptic, laxative. It has also been used as a as an aphrodisiac and tonic for the bladder.
In modern herbal medicine, Damiana is mainly used as a body tonic and to treat nervous disorders. Damiana can help in cases of intense anxiety, nervousness, lethargy as well as for mild forms of depression. Finally, Damiana can help with lowering blood sugar.
Making Tea: Put 1 teaspoon of the dried herb in a cup of boiling water and leave it for 5-10 minutes before serving.
