Why is it soft ? Is it plastic ?

No, This is Safety Tempered glass, even it's soft , But it is not plastic. It is soft tempered glass material.
Phone lens glass is very small, normal glass will break easily and harm your camera lens too, but soft safety glass won't break easily so it gives better protection.
