Biography

Dr. Ebenezer Haviland, M.D., son of Thomas Haviland & Jane Clement, was born 7 Mar 1742 in Rye, NY. He was a surgeon and later the owner of a popular tavern. He married first in 1763 to Mary Tredwell. No issue. He married second to Tamar Budd, daughter of Underhill Budd & Sarah Fowler. They had issue: Gilbert Budd, Esther "Hetty," Sarah Budd, Horatio Gates, and Ophelia. He died 28 Jun 1788 in Wallingford, CT. [1]


1776 Project

Surgeon Ebenezer Haviland served with 2nd Regiment, New York Militia during the American Revolution.

A surgeon in the 4th Regiment of the New York Continental Troops during the Revolutionary War. His tavern, known of course at that time as Haviland's Inn in Rye, NY, was situated on a major road between New York and Boston that was traveled by many important people. It was originally built as a home for a one Peter Brown, after whose death it came into the ownership of a Rev. James Wetmore, who used it as a rectory. It became used as an inn around 1763 when it was owned by James Wetmore's son Timothy, and by 1770 it was sold to Dr. Ebenezer Haviland. [2]


Mr. Wm. Neate presents his Compliments to Mr. Benjn Franklin and Mrs. Stevenson, and will do himself the pleasure of sending his Carriage to convey them to Richmond on Saturday next.

5. William Neate (d. 1775) was a London merchant, heavily engaged in the American trade. He shipped goods to Pa. for bf during his first mission to England and frequently supplied bf and Mrs. Stevenson with Newton pippins. London Chron., May 2–4, 1775; Gent.
