Note WW 11 Printed by waterlow and sons limited London. This Gibraltar 10/-
Shillings Notes was Issued on 1st July 1942 by the Government Of
Gibraltar for the multiple troops that were to land at the Rock for
the invasion of Africa. There was a large British naval
base that was constructed there at great expense at the end of the 19th Century
and became the backbone of Gibraltar's
ECOMINY, British control of Gibraltar enabled the Allies
to control the entrance to the Mediterranean during the Second
World War.
Shortly after this note was issued by the
government of Gibraltar on 8 November 1942, 466 aircraft from Gibraltar
landed on captured North African airfields from their headquarters in
Gibraltar, General Eisenhower and Admiral Sir Andrew Browne Cunningham directed
Operation Torch, the first major combined combat operation during World War II
involving American and British forces.
