The vented loop is an anti-siphon device which should be fitted into any marine toilet installed below the waterline (static or heeled). 

Toilets flushed with sea or river water require connections through the hull below water line.   If the toilet is installed below waterline the possibility of flooding through an open seacock must be prevented.   The 'vented loop' or 'anti siphon valve' is the standard item to help prevent this eventuality.
