California Gold Rush

The year was 1848, stories of men finding chunks of gold in California riverbeds were exploding in every part of the country, and the gigantic discovery of gold in California in 1848 was like throwing fuel on a bonfire. Within a year of its discovery, people were traveling the California Trail and flooding into the Sierra Nevada Range by the thousands, looking for their share of gold and the opportunity to get rich quick.

Here is how it happened.

John Sutter, a Swiss settler came to California in 1839 with the hopes of constructing an agricultural territory. He needed lumber and in early 1848 he allocated the mission of finding lumber to one of his men, James Marshall. Marshall decided to build a sawmill on the South Fork of the American river, about 40 miles from Sutter's home.

This is where it happened.

Marshall found a huge gold nugget on January 24, 1848, while at the sawmill. He and his men found more gold in the vicinity. Both Marshall and Sutter tried to keep things silent, but soon word leaked out. Gold fever immediately started, and the rest is history.

Many who already had arrived in California or Oregon instantly leaned into the western Sierras. Then, in December of 1848, President James Polk confirmed the findings to Congress and by the spring of 1849, the largest migration in American history was already taking place.

To this day, people look at the California gold rush as an exciting part of American history and collectors enjoy collecting commemorative coins, documents, and artifacts about this event, always interested in adding unique pieces of California gold rush mementos to their collection.

In reflection, the California gold rush continues intrigue and mystify, and will always be viewed as one of the greatest events in American history.
