These colourful rectangular cloths can be found strung along trails and peaks high in the Himalayas. 

They're used to bless the surrounding countryside. Each colour represents the five elements, in a particular order:

• blue for sky or space
• white for air or clouds
• red for fire
• green for water
• yellow for earth

Please note: Prayer flags naturally fade and fray over time. As a matter of fact, they are intentionally left unhemmed (the fabric is just cut and left without finish) in order for this to occur. 

As all things must eventually pass, this is symbolic of their inevitable passing. In the case of old prayer flags, new flags can either be hung over them or the old ones can be taken down and burned, thus releasing the last of the blessings.
