1681 Coast Of Barbary Map, A New System of Mathmatics, Jonas Moore, North Africa


Offered in this listing is an authentic 1681 map produced by Sir Jonas Moore Knight as part of his publication, A New System of Mathematics, considered to be one of the defining and most important works regarding navigational mathematics of its time.


Depicted is the Isle of Madagascar, off the African coast, with coastal reference to Zanzibar. Map is produced on laid paper.


This piece presents unframed in its original format as a single sheet. Some exterior edge staining can be observed as well as light browning throughout. No significant rips or tears. No repairs present this piece is being offered in original unrestored condition as it was found from an amazing estate collection from Portland Maine. In the collection were more maps as well as additional maps and graphs from this same publication.


This piece measures 6.5x4.5 inches approximately. It is very rare that maps of this age and quality become available.


Sir Jonas Moore, FRS was an English mathematician, surveyor, ordnance officer, and patron of astronomy. He took part in two of the most ambitious English civil engineering projects of the 17th century, draining the Great Level of the Fens and building the Mole at Tangier. In later life, his wealth and influence as Surveyor General of the Ordnance enabled him to become a patron and driving force behind the establishment of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
