From the inside cover:-

The statistics of the First World War make grim reading: more than eight million dead, twenty million wounded, and four empires toppled. This was the war to end all wars, the war that destroyed the old order and recklessly squandered human and material resources on a scale hitherto unknown.

Using advanced computer graphics, Great Battles of World War I presents, in a dramatic new perspective, eighteen of the most decisive encounters of the war. From the Western to the Eastern Fronts, Palestine to East Africa, and from the war at sea to the war in the air, these battles cover the entire scope and scale of die war and include the Battles of the Marne and Tannenberg in 1914, the Somme and Jutland in 1916, the Battle of Caporetto in 1917 and the Second Battle of the Marne in 1918.

Each battle illustrates a particular aspect or development of the war: why the Battle of Ypres ended in stalemate in 1914; how the Russian Brusilov Offensive of 1916 critically took pressure off the Western Front; why the Allied capture of the Messines Ridge in 1917 was so important tactically and how tanks were effectively deployed for the first time at Cambrai in 1917; and why the Battle of Megiddo in 1918 succeeded in defeating Turkey where the Gallipoli Campaign had failed.

As well as contemporary photographs there are magnificent colour illustrations of the crucial moments in each battle, and special box features provide details of weapons and uniforms, methods of communication, the use of animals - from carrier pigeons to dogs and mules - the realities of trench warfare, and the rapid development of tanks and aircraft. In addition, there are profiles of the war's major personalities - Haig, Foch, Hindenburg, Ludendorff and other commanders.

With an Introduction by Major-General Sir Jeremy Moore, Great Battles of World War I is a fitting commemoration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the outbreak of the war.
