The main cause of timing chain and tensioner failure with the Mazda SHY Skyactive engine is fuel ingress, fuel contaminates and degrades the oil which causes the oil to loseits lubrication capabilities, in time this causes premature engine wear which includes the timing chain components.

The reason for this fuel ingress is the DPF regeneration process, during this process unburnt fuel passes down the cylinder, past the piston rings which ends up in the sump, this is called cylinder or fuel wash.

When cylinder wash occurs during the DPF maintenance process the oil is diluted, this raises the oil level in the sump. On the dipstick there are three markings, there are the usual min and max levels as you would usually find, above the max level there is an ‘X’, this marks the maximum level of oil / fuel mixture permitted. Once this mark is reached the oil and filter must be replaced.
